Community pharmacy is finally getting access to the summary care records – the GPs’ medical records of patients. This will enable pharmacy to assist in providing advanced and enhanced services for their patients, and will save time and cost and improve accuracy. The roll-out is starting in November but will probably not be completed until two years later. In the meantime, NHS England has not explained when pharmacy would receive read-write access to those records. It said the Health and Social Care Information Centre was starting work on considering new capabilities such as writing to the summary care record, so it was too early to pre-judge when that might happen.
