Online medicine sellers now need to be registered with MHRA | PING

As of 1 July, anyone selling medicines online need to be registered with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. On every web page, the seller must also display the new European common logo. Clicking on that logo takes a user through to a list of approved sellers. Whilst any retailer can sell a medicine on the general sales list, only registered pharmacies are permitted to sell pharmacy medicines or prescription-only medicines. Anyone selling medicines online without being registered and having the logo can be sent to prison for up to two years and/or fined.

The EU common logo is a different scheme to the voluntary scheme operated by the General Pharmaceutical Council for registered pharmacies. The GPhC will now review its own scheme. Duncan Rudkin, the Chief Executive of the GPhC, welcomed the new mandatory EU logo scheme, saying: “We have been working closely with the MHRA ahead of the roll-out of the logo and will continue to do so during its implementation phase.” He added that the GPhC review would consider any changes to its own logo to keep patients safe when obtaining medicines over the Internet from a registered pharmacy.
